His exceptional career in the dental sciences has got a sound start as he graduated in 1990 with B.S in Biology from Long Island University and in 1993 from the Virginia Commonwealth University. He acquired his dental training from Medical College of Virginia at the School of Dentistry in the year of 1997 and then he proceeded to acquire his M.D. from the University of Maryland in the year 2000.

One of the milestones during a birthing process is that precious moment when the only thing that connects the mother to the infant is severed. This is the umbilical cord. After cutting the umbilical cord, it has always been a common practice to just discard the umbilical cord together with the placenta. Recent studies and discoveries showed that the cord blood harvested from a newborn infant can be beneficial in curing potentially lethal diseases such as blood related diseases, genetic disorders, certain types of cancer and many more.

Most medical institutions like hospitals now offer the option of storing cord blood specimens in cord blood bank. This option would be through a specialized institution that offers cord blood banking. The process of obtaining the cord blood from a newborn infant’s placenta and umbilical cord can be best explained here:

The cord blood is harvested from the blood which is left over in the placenta and in the umbilical cord right after a normal birth of the baby. The method most commonly used would be similar to standard blood collection techniques. The medical technician cannulates the vein of the severed umbilical cord using a needle connected to a blood bag, and the cord blood through the needle into the bag.

Cord blood samples can only be harvested once and this is why it is so important to take on the process of extracting carefully and correctly. Cord blood extractions are more plausible and possible with normal births since with normal births, the doctors and other medical staff do not have to worry about another ongoing operation which occurs during births through C-Sections. After the collection of these cord blood samples, the next important step would be the safe keeping of such riveting medical pieces. Cord blood can be stored and processed two ways. One is through public cord blood banks and another is through private cord blood banking. Cord blood banks are where cord blood samples are being stored and kept and can only is accessible to the donor or the donor’s immediate family and relatives.

Cord blood samples which are stored properly can give better opportunities and chances for medical doctors and practitioners for further studies and improving procedures involved in cord blood use and cord blood storage. The wonders brought about by cord blood are truly one solid testament on how perseverance and dedication can bring the world a step closer to a healthier life.

Dr. Mary Kneiser together with other physiatrists shares the same opinion that individuals, who experience pain and soreness after performing strenuous and exhausting exercises are actually suffering from post-workout muscle pain. This condition is commonly termed as delayed onset muscle soreness or DOMS. An individual will suffer from this syndrome almost for three days following a lengthy and eccentric workout, which the individual does not generally participate in. Some examples of strenuous physical activities are running downhill and lowering and lifting weights. DOMS is therefore a very common syndrome, experienced by almost all people, whoever engages in eccentric exercises for the very first time.

The key characteristic feature of DOMS syndrome is a feeling of excruciating pain in the muscles, whose severity entirely depends on the intensity and length of the physical activity that triggered it. People, who perform a particular exercise for the very first time, are more likely to experience this syndrome. According to Dr. Mary Kneiser as well as other physiatrists, until now no specific treatment has been unearthed, which can effectively cure DOMS syndrome. However, they believe that exercising the aching muscles can help to reduce the pain and discomfort level. It has been found that the muscle soreness is more likely to get worsened when a person abruptly stops doing workouts. Despite the fact that the syndrome causes a lot of pain in the initial stage, it actually helps to boost an individual’s strength and endurance levels during future workouts. Few of the treatments that can help to get relieve from DOMS are a hot bath, a body massage and gentle stretching.

For majority of the people, musculoskeletal soreness can turn out to be extremely agonizing. Specifically, owing to muscle cramps and spasms individuals can find it very difficult to carry out their normal daily activities. However, Dr. Mary Kneiser, who is a Michigan-based doctor, specializing in rehabilitation as well as physical medication, over the years has helped many people to successfully recover from musculoskeletal soreness and pain.

Most people think that individuals, who engage in daily workouts or athletes, are more prone to suffer from musculoskeletal pain. But, in reality this is not true, because it has been found that individuals with sedentary lifestyles are also affected by this kind of pain. Muscle cramps that are caused owing to a heavy blow, sudden jerking or strenuous physical activities can lead to poor coordination of the body as well as trauma. It causes muscles contraction, which results in pain and soreness. The parts of the body, which mostly get affected by cramps, are quadriceps, calves and hamstrings. Often, the pain spreads to others body parts, such as the arms, abdomen, hands and feet.
